Thanks to the generous gifts of our donors, dedicated researchers are learning more about asthma every year. That means discoveries are being made that lead to better treatments. Step by step, research is getting us closer to our vision of a future without asthma.

Asthma Canada helps outstanding Canadian researchers through our National Research Program and Graduate Student Research Awards. Since 2017, we’ve supported 30 PhD and MSc students. Their work helps us understand asthma’s causes, mechanisms and treatments.

Today, Asthma Canada is asking you to support new discoveries with a gift that will help our National Research Program.

By leaving a gift today, it will be doubled by our generous partner! 💙

By leaving a gift, you’ll be contributing to the work of Canada’s most promising asthma research students.

This includes recent recipient Courtney Hoskinson. She is a PhD student at the University of British Columbia studying how gut bacteria influence the development of asthma., Courtney is thrilled that donors like you are giving her the chance to conduct this research. She believes it could change the future of the disease and lead to new ways of predicting and preventing asthma and other allergies. “I’m excited to help people avoid asthma by making new discoveries in the growing field of the gut microbiome.”

Michael (Ho Jung) Yoon, an MSc student at the University of British Columbia, has also won an award. He is identifying cells and pathways that cause resistance to the common inhaled corticosteroid [ICS] asthma treatment. Michael is thankful for the support from Asthma Canada and its donors. “This research uses single-cell technology. This cutting-edge method is not available to a lot of researchers because it’s expensive. But it can provide great detail on the complex mechanisms of asthma.

Your gift, will help us study the needs of the Canadian asthma community. Asthma Canada’s most recent study interviewed Canadians with severe asthma for their perspectives on biologic therapies. It was the first study conducted in Canada to include patient’s voice on this topic.

The results show that patients value these effective therapies, but are concerned about their cost. Our advocacy team is currently working hard to help patients with the issues they’ve highlighted.

Asthma is Canada’s third most common chronic disease, and the most common among children. Currently, 4.6 million Canadians are living with asthma. The annual cost is estimated at $2.1 billion for treatments, hospital stays, and medications and is expected to climb to $4.2 billion by 2033!

That’s why your support for research is so important. Your kind donation will also contribute to Asthma Canada’s educational services. These include the Asthma & Allergy Helpline. It offers free bilingual advice from Certified Respiratory Educators. Our webinars feature treatment best practices and new research. You will also help Asthma Canada’s advocacy. We raise the voice of the Canadian asthma community on important issues like access to medication, clean energy, and vaccinations.

Don’t forget, by leaving a gift today, it will be doubled by our generous partner! 💙
