🌟 Awardee Spotlight: Israel Shpilman 🌟 We’re excited to introduce Israel, a recipient of our 2025 Graduate Student Research Awards🎓💙 Israel is pursuing his PhD at McGill University, building on his Biochemistry degree from McMaster University and research experience in respiratory and immune-related diseases. Research Project: 'B-Lymphocyte derived extracellular vesicles as key regulators of allergic airway inflammation' Israel’s research focuses on B-lymphocytes—immune cells involved in regulating inflammation. In his lab, they have discovered that these cells release tiny particles called extracellular vesicles (EVs) that carry microRNAs, which may influence how inflammatory cells behave. His project will investigate how specific microRNAs within these EVs affect the development of eosinophils—key drivers of airway inflammation in asthma. He will then test whether synthetic versions of these microRNAs can be used in lab and animal models to reduce inflammation. Through this research, Israel aims to identify new molecular targets that could inform future asthma therapies. Join us in congratulating Israel and wishing him success on his research journey! ✨ #asthma #asthmaResearch #Research @mcgillu @mcgillscience @mcmasteru
Myth: Chronic cough is just a habit. Fact: Chroni Myth: Chronic cough is just a habit. Fact: Chronic cough is a serious medical condition that affects around 10% of the general population and up to 20% in some countries. It is not simply something you can “get over” or ignore. This condition often disrupts sleep, work, and social connections — with nearly three-quarters of patients reporting sleep disruption and daily limitations. Many also experience embarrassment, fatigue, or depression, and in some cases even rib fractures or fainting during coughing fits. It deserves greater recognition and understanding. By challenging myths and sharing facts, we can reduce stigma, encourage people to seek medical advice, and support stronger pathways to care. Doctors may use different names for chronic cough, depending on the cause: - Refractory Chronic Cough: when the cough continues even after treating common causes.
- Idiopathic Chronic Cough: when no clear cause is found.
- Cough Hypersensitivity Syndrome (neurogenic cough): when the airway nerves are overly sensitive.
- Chronic cough can also be linked to lung diseases, such as:
 - Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF) – stiff, scarred lungs.
 - Interstitial Lung Diseases (ILDs) – a group of conditions causing lung inflammation or scarring. Understanding the type helps patients and doctors choose the right treatment.
