Asthma Canada would like to extend a heartfelt tha Asthma Canada would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to everyone who took part in the TCS Waterfront events this weekend in support of the 4.7 million people with asthma in Canada. 💙 Whether you joined the run, walked alongside the team, helped fundraise or showed support, you were part of something important. Your support helps us:
🔹 Provide trusted education and resources to help people better understand and manage their asthma
🔹 Support vital research that drives innovation and improves treatment options
🔹 Advocate for better policies, access to care, and awareness so that no one is left behind We also want to thank everyone who has donated so far. Our goal: $10,000
So far, we’ve raised: $9,290, $710 to go! We’re so close—can you help us reach the finish line? Link to donate in story. Thank you for helping us improve the lives of people with asthma in Canada. 💙
🌟 Awardee Spotlight: Oscar Gonzalez-Morales 🌟 We’re excited to introduce Oscar, a recipient of our 2025 Graduate Student Research Awards 🎓💙 Oscar is an MSc student in Immunology at the University of Manitoba, working in Dr. Neeloffer Mookherjee’s lab. With a background in biotechnology and therapeutic development, he is passionate about solutions for severe asthma. Research Project: 'Effect of cationic host defence peptides on HDAC2 and related pathways in steroid-unresponsive asthma' Approximately 10–15% of asthma patients do not respond to steroid treatments. Oscar’s research explores Innate Defence Regulator (IDR) peptides, which his lab has observed to reduce inflammation and improve lung function in experimental models. His project will examine how IDR peptides may help restore levels of HDAC2, a protein that is reduced in steroid-resistant asthma and is linked to treatment failure. By studying this pathway, he aims to uncover how IDR peptides could support future therapeutic strategies. Oscar’s work may help identify new targets for treating severe, steroid-unresponsive asthma. Join us in congratulating Oscar on his innovative research! ✨ @umanitoba | #asthma #asthmaResearch #Research @mb_lung_association

🌟 Awardee Spotlight: Omar Abdelraheem 🌟 We’re excited to introduce Omar, a recipient of our 2025 Graduate Student Research Awards 🎓💙 Omar is an MSc student at Western University in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine under the supervision of Dr. Lisa Cameron. His research builds on a strong foundation in microbiology, immunology, and respiratory science. Research Project: 'Elucidating the development and pathogenicity of dual-positive Th2-Th17 cells' Asthma inflammation is often linked to T-helper cells such as Th2 and Th17. In more severe asthma, a hybrid cell type—Th2-Th17—has been observed and may contribute to worse symptoms. Omar’s research aims to understand how these hybrid cells develop and what features make them harmful. He will study the signals that cause Th2 cells to convert into Th2-Th17 cells and track their characteristics. By uncovering the role of these cells, Omar hopes to identify new biological pathways that could guide the development of targeted treatments for severe asthma. Join us in celebrating Omar and his dedication to advancing asthma research! ✨ #asthma #asthmaResearch #Research
